Rumors have been flying for weeks about the new iPad 3, even in this publication. And now, it’s true. The new iPad was, finally, officially launched last Wednesday at an event in San Francisco, where Apple announced the new tablet to the world, featuring a plethora of new technology and features over the previous version, including a super high-resolution screen. The iPad 3 has received mixed reviews after its announcement, but with the powerful new display, technologists will be forced to improve their designs to keep up with Apple product users.

One of the important events of this past week was the talk “Probing the small and large structure of the universe” by Nobel laureate, Professor Jerome Friedman. On Wednesday evening, Illinois Institute of Technology and the MIT Club of Chicago hosted a presentation by Professor Jerome Friedman, 1990 Nobel Laureate in Physics. Jerome Friedman received the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering work on the inner structure of protons and neutrons in the atomic nucleus. He also was awarded the W.H.K. Shimer College organized a guest lecture on “35 Years of Art & Science Collaboration”. The lecture was based on Dr. Daniel Sandin’s “History of the Electronic Visualization Lab at University of Illinois, Chicago”. Dr. Daniel Sandin is an internationally recognized pioneer of electronic art and visualization, and 1964 alumnus of Shimer College. In 1973, he co-founded the Electronic Visualization Lab with Computer Science professor Tom DeFanti.

The Applied Math Department at IIT hosted two colloquia last week. The first colloquium was organized on Monday, March 5, on “Time Scale of Dynamic Networks” by Ms. Rajmonda Sulo Caceres, PhD candidate in Laboratory for Computational Population Biology at University of Illinois, Chicago. She discussed possible formalizations of the problem of identifying inherent time scales of interactions and presented some initial approaches in solving it, noting the advantages and limitations of these approaches.

Last week, IIT witnessed a series of colloquia organized by various departments like the Applied Math, Chemistry, Physics and Humanities. Kicking off the series of colloquia, the Applied Math Department hosted an interesting lecture on “A Study on the Degree-Based Conditions for Hamiltonian Properties.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Shin-Shin Kao, Visiting Professor at University of Southern California. In this invited talk, Dr. Kao talked about the survey of some well-known theorems regarding graphs being hamiltonian or with stronger hamiltonian properties.

Apple's iPad is one of the best-selling tablets in the world, and the iPad 3 is one of the most anticipated devices from the company this year. The upcoming iPad 3 has been a main topic for discussion recently after learning that Apple is set to present it at an event during the first week of March. While the rumor mill has been working overtime, a few reporters were able to get hands-on time with some actual iPad 3 parts, confirming recent speculation about higher resolution and an upgraded chip system.

Social Justice Week (20th – 25th February) kicked off with an Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) General Body Meeting at IIT. The theme of the meeting was “Everybody Without Borders - The Power of Zero”. Dhara Shah, Directors of Projects at EWB-USA,IIT and IL State Representative, EWB-USA delivered an impressive presentation about the “United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UNMDP)” and some other topics related to social justice around the world. Starting the talk with health issues around the world, she explained the inter-relation of health, sustainable development and lifestyle.

The second general body meeting of Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) at IIT witnessed an inspiring and motivational speech by guest lecturer Frank Bergh. Bergh, an electrical engineer for grid interconnection at Nordex-USA, delivered a talk on the topic of community development. As the grid interconnection specialist for Nordex-USA, he is involved in power systems analysis, project development, turbine sales, and electrical engineering design for wind farms in North America.

The Art Institute of Chicago became the first U.S. museum to receive a grant from the Government of India. The Art Institute hosted an Indian delegation on Saturday, January 28th, to sign an agreement for the Vivekananda Memorial Program for Museum Excellence. The $500,000 grant honors Hindu monk Swami Vivekananda, who spoke at the Art Institute during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.
