You may have seen the backpacks made of Capri-Sun packets or pencil cases made of Chips Ahoy! wrappers, but did you know that you can now be a part of this new craze in recycling? IIT’s Sustainability Committee, Gangreen, has partnered up with TerraCycle to use your trash to produce these new fashion statements. TerraCycle is eliminating the idea of waste and rethinking the definition of recycling. They are producing eco-friendly products from a wide variety of traditionally non-recyclable waste materials- soon to be your waste materials.

Gangreen is working with TerraCycle to collect your waste which will be used to produce these novel products. Boxes will be located in the reception of each resident hall and academic building along with sorority and fraternity houses to collect CapriSun pouches, chip bags, and candy wrappers. TerraCycle will give Gangreen a donation for every item collected. Proceeds will help program events on campus such as Earth Day in the Bog (coming April 22nd) and speakers from the US Green Building Council. For further information on TerraCycle, visit www.terracycle.net.

Gangreen also needs a new logo! Are you good at graphic design? Do you enjoy drawing for fun? Are you interested in winning $50? Then design a new logo for IIT’s Sustainability Committee. We are looking for a creative design to support our new sustainability efforts around campus. The competition is open to all IIT students, faculty and staff until March 18th. The winner will receive a $50 Visa gift card accepted most everywhere. Multiple submissions are allowed as long as all artwork is original with no copyrighted material. The winning logo will be used for publicity by Gangreen during its entirety. Please submit all logos as .jpeg files by March 18th to gangreen_group@iit.edu. Winner will be notified on March 27th. For more information, please find us on Facebook or visit www.iit.edu/~gangreen_group.
