Private scholarships - apply today!
Date:
Sunday, February 27th, 2011 The Financial Aid Department is back this semester to tell you all about their services and keeping you aware of developments in financial aid, in an effort to spread some knowledge of the opportunities out there to save up on some money, since we tuition is not very easy on the wallet. This week, the topic being discussed is about the scholarships option in the Finances tab on myIIT.
As of today, there are more than 1.5 million scholarship opportunities available to students, totaling more than $3.4 billion! Every year, students contact the Office of Financial Aid to inquire about private scholarships to supplement financial aid packages and expenses. In order to help meet the needs of our student, our office increased the outside scholarship resources available to help expose students to upcoming opportunities and deadlines for scholarships.
During the Fall term, TechNews reported to students the new scholarship channel to the Finances Tab on MyIIT. New scholarship announcements and deadlines are added to this channel daily. The scholarships showcased on the portal are specific to our student populations, including special qualifications, such as academic, athletic or artistic talent. Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study, who are members of underrepresented groups, who live in certain areas of the country or who demonstrate financial need.
The scholarship channel also links to the resources page on the Financial Aid website here: http://www.iit.edu/financial_aid/resources/. This page has several menus that identify specific scholarship opportunities for students. You can access direct links to private scholarship opportunities and organizations from this webpage. The scholarship channel in MyIIT and financial aid resources page connect students to the Private Scholarship Database. This database is a comprehensive search tool for private scholarships for students. You can connect to this database and search for a specific organization, scholarship type, and more. This is a wonderful resource for identifying specific opportunities for specific student types.
Not only has the Office of Financial Aid compiled online resources for students, there are also scholarship books and materials in our office. Students may stop by to look through these books and copy information out of them. These are located at the front desk in our office in Main Building, Room 104. The Galvin Library also has a section of scholarship resources for students too. Galvin did a wonderful job listing the scholarship materials on line for students here: http://galvinlibrary.wordpress.com/2010/02/.
The Office of Financial Aid wants to encourage students to utilize these resources to help minimize debt once you graduate. If you are awarded a scholarship, you can easily notify the Office of Financial Aid through MyIIT on the Finances Tab: click Financial Aid awards in the middle of the page, select the current aid year, and select the Resources/Additional Information tab. If you have any questions about the private scholarship process, you may contact Jackie Anderson directly at jander20@iit.edu or finaid@iit.edu.
