I don’t know if you guys have heard but God, It’s brutal out here! If you have been on a dating app, you probably know what I’m talking about. The pressure to create the perfect storyline via pictures and smart prompts is real. The expectations set for a person on dating apps are a tad bit higher compared to the good old-fashioned concept of being “set-up.” On here you’ve to be your own wingman, have all the right pictures to show that you are a fun-loving person with a happening life (and of course a dog, for those brownie points). All this again, is just for the swipe right.
It only gets more complicated as you move forward; it is not just about starting the conversation but keeping it engaging and finally landing a date. How do we make it less brutal on ourselves? Well, I’m going to try to be to your Bradshaw column from “Sex and the City.” While you might find the love of your life on one of these apps as several people claim, it shouldn’t be your biggest expectation. Your focus should rather be on the fact that you’re going to be meeting new and interesting people. Dating apps have been around for a while now, and they are here to stay, because at the end of the day they make it easier for you to find a match with similar interests.
While it might be hard not to take every failed date personally, it really gives you a multitude of options of meeting people from the athletic to the academic. You will most likely go on a couple average dates before you meet the one who matches your energy or complements it, and that is a possibility you should consider.
“Ghosting” is another colloquial dating concept, and you might not want to be on the receiving end of this treatment, but it is good to be comfortable enough in being on either end of it because ultimately it is a game of choice and truly, there’s plenty of fish in the sea. Unfortunately, there is no rule book for online dating, but how you can enjoy this authentic 21st century experience is by simply taking it as it comes and walking into it with confidence, a smile and your friend on standby with that emergency call, just in case!
