How did your involvement with TechNews begin/what inspired you to join?
“I still remember talking with Irewole Akande (a previous peer career coach and Illinois Tech alum), who reviewed my resume during my first semester around October 2016. I was asking him for advice on how to get involved on campus and how to bag a job. Randomly, Anoopa Sundararajan, then the editor-in-chief of TechNews, popped in and gave Akande a hug before asking him to review her resume as well. She also acknowledged my presence, and I was introduced to her. In that momentary introduction, I learned about TechNews, and she invited me to join the TechNews writers’ meetings.
Since I love writing, this organization sounded perfect to me at the time. I had written articles in a French newsletter when I was around 12 years old. I obtained that position after I excelled in one of the essay exams of ‘Alliance Française.’ I continued writing. It is one of the things that I love doing. Whether it is writing technical reports or even grocery shopping lists, writing down on a piece of paper or even typing on my laptop is something I will always look forward to.”
Do you have a favorite memory or sentiment regarding TechNews?
“I was so thrilled when my first article was published in October 2016. But, I was way elated when I wrote about a United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) conference that took place in Washington D.C. in the spring of 2017, and that article was published on the cover of TechNews. Following its publication, I attended a lecture for one of my computer science classes the next day. Unbelievably, the professor referred to my article as an example while explaining certain concepts in assembly programming. I just could not believe that professors at Illinois Tech read TechNews articles religiously, and that became one of my favorite memories.”
Illinois Tech involvements outside of TechNews?
“I am the secretary of the Illinois Tech UNICEF chapter. I have covered quite an exhaustive amount of UNICEF-related articles in TechNews from fall 2016 until now. I am also an active member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Association for Computing Machinery - Women (ACM-W), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) on campus. I am also a commuter ambassador and work as a campus life assistant (both are student life leader positions).”
Any hobbies or interests outside of school/TechNews?
“I enjoy conferences, even the virtual ones, and coding events like hackathons. Besides that, I like swimming and listening to music and am a huge fan of K-pop music, R&B, rap, and instrumental.”
