• Pell Grants still in limbo

    While life at IIT continues to move forward, Congress is in a continued conversation over balancing the federal budget. Last spring, the Office of Financial Aid encouraged students to take action to inform members of Congress to vote against cuts to federal Pell Grant funding.  Eventually a budget was approved for the current 2011 fiscal year.  However, to prepare for future costs, a Super Congress, consisting of 12 members was formed with the task of recommending further cuts and possible revenue increases for the 2012 fiscal year.

    "Friends are the family we choose for ourselves." This phrase is all too true when it comes to the relationships and community given by a sorority: not only are they your friends, but you really do symbolically choose them as a family of sisters. Today is the day that Alpha Sigma Alpha, one of the three sororities on the IIT Main Campus, is celebrating its Founder’s Day. ASA is the only national sorority on the campus and the celebration of our sisterhood nationwide is important.

    Through the Land of the Black Forest Cake – Schwarzwald
    My triceps hurt when I pull open a door. My ankles feel better when I rotate them. My calf muscles stretch uncomfortably when I bend to pick up something. The backrest pillow is suddenly not appeasing enough. There is always this constant need to stretch... Yet, every bit of muscle ache is worth a trip to the Black Forest! The Black Forest, locally called Schwarzwald, is a wooded mountain range located in southwest Germany.

    Most people have heard Florence + the Machine at some point, even if they didn’t realize it. The band, led by frontwoman Florence Welch, has enjoyed lots of mainstream success after the release of their 2009 album, "Lungs," with some of their songs being featured on popular TV shows such as "Gossip Girl," "Skins," and "Community." Florence + the Machine just released their sophomore effort, "Ceremonials," in the US on November 1.
  • Volleyball end season with a win

    The Illinois Tech Women's Volleyball team ended their regular season last Tuesday with a comfortable win against Roosevelt University (25-16, 25-21, 25-19). This was the first time the Hawks had faced off against their former head coach, Kelly Fitzgerald, who is now the head volleyball coach at Roosevelt.
    Senior Kayla Heller led the team with 10 kills (and a career high .769 hitting percentage) in the win. Junior Rebecca Bograd had 27 assists and 9 digs while Sophomore Kate Kendall chipped in 8 kills and 2 service aces.

    The International Students Organization has revamped itself this year and is back with a bang this semester, with a new board and lots of fun events in tow. A group geared towards promoting the culture and diversity of the international student body at IIT, where it makes up almost 43% of the total student body - the highest percentage in the country. They are here to give international students a platform to showcase their cultures and to give domestic students a chance to take part in some of their awesome festivals and events.
