DEAR df: I’m worried about how much a good friend of mine is drinking. They’re also a student at IIT and I’ve noticed it start to take a toll on their academic performance. I wouldn’t necessarily call them an alcoholic, but they’re up to a couple of beers a day and I’m concerned about it escalating. I’d confront them about it, but I don’t want to strain the friendship. What should I do?

From people dancing on tables to Bhangra in the middle of the dance floor, Bollywood Night was exactly as we’d hoped it would be. A congregation of all the Desis (and some non-Desis) grooving to the best Hindi music of the last 25 years all under one roof. The night started off at 10 p.m. instead of 9 p.m. as originally promised because of the phenomenon we like to call "Indian time" whereby people show up a good hour after the event starts. Nevertheless, the raw enthusiasm of everyone present there completely made up for it and by 10:30 p.m., the party was in full swing.

Couple the series’ relative obscurity with the fact that its last numbered entry, “Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation” released all the way back in 2007, and you’d be forgiven for the fact that its newest upcoming title, “Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown” might have slipped underneath your air radar. Still, the fact still stands that “Ace Combat 7” is finally a thing and is taxiing for a release date of January 18, 2019 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (and a February 1, 2019 release date for Windows).

After the prior week contained the first senate hearing of the semester, the evening of Wednesday, September 19 hosted the first Illinois Tech Student Government Association (SGA) committee meetings of the fall 2018 semester. Traditionally, these committee meetings are designed as time for senators to meet with their individual committee heads and make progress on their various projects, as well as being structured timeslots for newcomers and volunteers to the organization to also meet with and possibly collaborate with the elected members.

How, then, does a movie where the plot is just a manufactured excuse to justify rampant bloodshed go on to become a pivotal moment in changing shooter movies forever? How does “John Wick” go from being a nobody to the new face of the action genre? The answer to this question lies in the same place as it does for the eponymous character: the execution.

As people who directly benefit by the wartime sacrifices made by the generations before us, it is our duty to keep their stories alive. This line of thought is what prompted me to dedicate this week’s Hidden History article to a regiment of the New York National Guard known as the 369th Infantry Regiment - the first African American regiment to serve with the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) during World War I (WWI).

Video game review: "Into the Breach"

"Into the Breach" is the second game made by Subset games after the Steam indie classic "FTL: Faster Than Light." Given the success of the latter title, a six year development gap from 2012’s "FTL" is somewhat concerning even for a small indie studio, made even more concerning when I downloaded "Into the Breach" only to find the file size at a whopping 141 mb, meaning the download time was non-existent.

A face smiles at me from the other side of the hall, two paths colliding for just a second to exchange rushed greetings. With nine research projects and one class to teach, it is no wonder Professor Sonja Petrovic maintains such a fast pace even when walking down the halls. I managed to find a small hole in her schedule in order to kick off this column - and so, I present to you a bit on how research works in the Department of Applied Mathematics.
