Quinn Castaneda
Technews Writer
Sat Apr 21, 2018

Full name: Quinn Madilyn Castaneda

Hometown: Bartlett, Illinois

Year and major: Second year applied physics with a concentration in mechanical engineering

Position in TechNews: "I'm a copy editor, meaning I get to find everybody's mistakes and fix them (and also judge them). I also wrote my first article recently so if you really wanted to you could consider me a writer. I'll leave that up to you."

How did your involvement with TechNews begin/what inspired you to join?
"My roommate (and our amazing assistant editor) Lexi Detweiler joined this organization as a writer during our freshman year, and I would always ask her if she wanted me to proofread anything she wrote when she was finished. She would tell me that that's what the editors are for and that if I wanted to I should become one, so I did."

Do you have a favorite memory or sentiment regarding TechNews?
"It's difficult to pick a favorite. I've had a lot of fun at all the events we've had like the JackBox nights, the Culver's outing, and the birthday party, and I'm super glad I've gotten closer to everyone involved. It's cliche, but most of my best memories are simply the times I spend in the TechNews office with Lexi and Ethan Castro and anyone else that decides to join us."

Illinois Tech involvements outside of TechNews?
"I'm a DJ for WIIT and host a show called "Swear to Shake It Up (If You Swear to Listen)" which is currently on Mondays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Because I like so many types of music, my show's premise is that I play any kind of music with no songs of the same genre back-to-back. I'm also a member of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and the vice president of Writers at Illinois Tech (WaIT)."

Any hobbies or interests outside of school/TechNews?
"I pride myself in liking a wide variety of music and recently started collecting CDs. It was initially only because I liked the lyric books that came with CDs when I was younger, but as my music taste expanded, I made it a goal to collect all standard songs (as in not remixes or live recordings) released by artists I like. Sometimes this means having to import CDs from other countries or owning multiple versions of a particular album, but that's something I'm absolutely fine with. I've also attended quite a few concerts over the past few years, and I also enjoy reading and drawing, and lately I've started listening to podcasts."

Any other thoughts or factoids you'd like to have shared?
"I am short. I'm very introverted. I love dogs and would probably sell you for one. My favorite color is orange and once you know that, you won't be able to forget. I absorb energy from memes and Vine references. I like shiny things. I'm pretty much always cold. My sister and I were named after my mom's favorite book. Someday I want to start collecting swords. You're doing great and I'm proud of you."
