The Scarlet Hawks made their way to Indiana as they took on Purdue Calumet at Munster High School. A hard fought 1-0 win gave the Scarlet Hawks their third conference win of the season.
The game began on the defensive side for the Hawks as they struggled to find any rhythm in the early portion of the game. The Scarlet Hawks trudged through the relentless pressured imposed by the Peregrines of Purdue Calumet. As the first half progressed, the Hawks began to find their rhythm with exceptional play from midfielders Brandon Ramirez, Jorge Salas, and Robert Rixer. Both Illinois Tech and Purdue Calumet exchanged strong sequences back and forth as both teams struggled to find the net. The defensive minded Hawks held the Peregrines to a scoreless first half.
The second half provided a spark to the game as the Hawks found their rhythm early. Illinois Tech had a great chance when Jorge Salas shot a rocket free kick from outside the box. However, Purdue Calumet’s goalkeeper, Jeremy Marquez, made a tremendous save to keep the game scoreless as the second half progressed.
Purdue Calumet’s best chance came on a mishit by defender Bart Grabowski which left Papa Otoo one on one with Illinois Tech’s goalkeeper Euijin Yang. Yang, a first year starter, made a tremendous save from the right footed shot of Otoo to keep the game scoreless. Senior Captain, Robert Rixer made the most of his opportunity netting in his first goal of the 2013- 2014 season. The goal came off of Nathan McMahon’s long pass to a streaking Rixer as he found the back of the net with a laser right footed shot.
The Hawks absorbed numerous offensive waves from the Peregrines as Illinois Tech held on to win and preserve their second shutout of the season. The Scarlet Hawks are now 5-4-3 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. They look to keep their winning ways as they take on Trinity International and Olivet Nazarene in the coming weeks.
