On Saturday, senior Stephanie Lucas travelled to the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Vancouver, for the 2010 NAIA Cross Country National Championships. Of 331 female runners competing in the 5k championship race, Lucas finished 75th, with a final time of 19:09. Following the race, Coach Kopinski seemed pleased with the results. “With typical Vancouver conditions (wet, muddy and uneven ground), Lucas still had the best finish in a National Championship meet by an IIT athlete, posting the second fastest time by any runner at the championship meet, and finishing 20 places ahead of her spot last year on the same course.”

Lucas’ four year career as an IIT cross country runner was well marked. “Stephanie capped off the best career of any IIT female athlete in the history of our athletics department this past weekend” says Kopinski. “She is a four time NAIA National Championship qualifier and has 4 CCAC All-Conference awards to her name. She was also the 2009 CCAC Conference Champion, 2010 NAIA National runner of the week (Sept. 20 – 26) and IIT female freshman athlete of the year (2007-2008). In addition, Lucas was awarded the Schommer Weisman Award (2009-2010) and holds all the female cross country records at IIT.”
