Jennifer Walling presents at first Sustainability Forum of semester on environmental lobbying

Every month, the Illinois Tech Office of Campus Energy and Sustainability hosts a speaker to present at its Sustainability Forums, open to all staff, faculty, and students of the university. The first such forum was held on Friday, September 14 in the Hermann Hall ballroom and featured Jennifer Walling, executive director of the Illinois Environmental Council (IEC).

The first general body meeting of the brand-new Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) student chapter was on Tuesday, September 11, 2018. This chapter was launched underneath Illinois Tech’s Association for Computing Machinery – Women (ACM-W). The meeting covered what the chapter plans are for the semester and this involves a cybersecurity themed escape room and participating in the National Cyber League.

Specifically, the group brought to the president and provost’s attention that many students are upset about the lack of notification regarding the departure of Vice Provost for Student Access, Success, and Diversity Initiatives (SASDI) Gerald Doyle.

Illinois Tech shuttle bus canceled this semester, and why it matters.

On July 23, 2018, approximately a month before classes started, Michael Horan, Vice President for Finance and Administration at Illinois Institute Technology sent an email to all the Illinois Tech Students who had signed up for the commuter shuttle bus alert. You can find a screenshot of the email itself in the comments of a post on the Illinois Tech Student Community page on Facebook if you search “shuttle” in the handy Facebook ‘search this page’ box. You can also find a small sample of the healthy academic debate within the comments as well.

SPS hosts physics department meet-and-greet

Illinois Tech’s physics department is quite small, which means it is very easy for students to get to know the department faculty and staff: but they must be given the opportunity to do so. In order to facilitate this introduction process, the Society of Physics Students (SPS) chapter at Illinois Tech hosted a “Physics Department Meet-and-Greet” event on Tuesday, September 11.

Love to Dance holds first rehearsal, bubble tea excursion

Love to Dance (LTD) has waltzed into this first semester with their first rehearsal on September 6. With performing and apprentice members alike, there were a lot of fresh new faces to be seen. Renewed enthusiasm persisted throughout the session as everyone was excited about the trip to Chinatown following the first half of the rehearsal to find a place and time to bond with fellow team members.

Junior Hawks volunteer program takes flight

Wednesday, September 5 is when we had the first meeting for all the new Junior Hawks on campus this year to kickstart the admission process for next term. Junior Hawks is a group of Illinois Tech volunteers who are a part of the admissions process by meeting with prospective students and their families to help them make the best and most informed decision they can with regards to what college they choose to attend.

Yamaha and Quinlan & Fabish Music Company are proud to present internationally acclaimed violinist and composer Mads Tolling to VanderCook College of Music on September 27, 2018. The two-time Grammy Award-winner will present a master class for VanderCook students and students from Chicagoland area schools. Tolling will join VanderCook’s Philharmonic Orchestra in concert later in the evening.
