Kanyakumari is a popular tourist destination in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The town is at the southernmost tip of India mainland and the meeting point of three bodies of water: the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. There is so much spoken and written about sunrise and sunset in Kanyakumari that it becomes one of the must-experience things when at the southern tip of India. I hail from Kanyakumari and I can share from my knowledge what makes Kanyakumari's sunrise and sunset unique and why one should not miss it.
In most places in India, you can see either the sunrise or the sunset in the ocean whereas in Kanyakumari, it is possible to see both the sunrise and the sunset in the ocean. If you have never been to Kanyakumari, you might be wondering as to what is special about the sunrise and sunset at this place. At Kanyakumari, the three water bodies namely the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean meet. The confluence of these three seas is referred to as "Thiruveni Sangamam.” The meeting point of the three oceans makes the water bluish green in color. When the sun rays fall on the bluish green color water, the entire landscape illuminates, paving way for a breathtaking view. On closer view, you will get a feeling that the sun, looking like a ball of fire, rises from and drops down directly into the water. Swami Vivekanand Rock Memorial and Thiruvalluvar Statue, two iconic monuments located in the meeting point of three oceans, add to the beauty of the place. Sun rises close to these two monuments making it unique. Now isn’t that something too amazing to miss out?
To get a good view of the sunset, you must be at the Sunset Point. The Sunset Point is usually crowded and the environment is very lively. Another popular viewpoint is the Swami Vivekanand Rock Memorial. You need to take a boat ride to reach the rock. The entire environment at that spot that is lively enough to tempt you to spend quite a few hours there and makes you capture the beautiful sunrise or sunset as best as you can.
Though the views of the sunrise and the sunset are beautiful throughout the year, there are particular times when you get the best views. Ideally you should visit Kanyakumari between November and January when the weather is extremely pleasant, and the sky is clear. Finally of course, don’t forget to carry a good camera because you will get the opportunity to click breathtaking pictures.
